About Counselling

Choosing the right counsellor for you is an important first step.
The therapeutic relationship between therapist and client is one of the most significant aspects of counselling.

How might counselling help you?

People come to counselling for many different reasons and from all walks of life. We are all human beings experiencing what it means to be alive.

Have you had a stressful life event? Perhaps you are suffering with the symptoms of overwhelm, anxiety, depression or burn out. Or you may live with someone who is suffering. Maybe you or someone you know has a history of past trauma, loss, grief or deep sadness.
Are you stuck with a general feeling of confusion or a sense that something just doesn't feel right?
You may have come to a transitional point in your life such as parenthood or retirement and finding it difficult to adjust.
Sometimes we can simply be searching for self-acceptance.
Reaching a crossroads and not knowing where to turn can be debilitating.

A counsellor or psychotherapist may receive training based on various therapeutic theories, which will impact their work in practice. Humanistic, psychodynamic, psychoanalytic, Jungian, existential, person-centered, attachment-based, transpersonal psychology, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) are a few of the more well-known theoretical models.
Often referred to as a "whole person" approach, integrative counselling therapists may combine aspects of various theoretical models with an individual and holistic focus.

Counselling therapy provides the space to express your thoughts and feelings in a safe, accepting environment where you will be listened to and not judged. Working with a therapist can support you while you explore, helping you to bridge your inner and outer worlds.

Talking through your concerns with a counsellor can help you to make sense of what you are going through and help you to understand why you are feeling the way you do. Your self-awareness grows. This understanding in itself can bring about personal psychological change, helping you to recognise the choices and options available to you.
